MySQL’s GROUP BY Standards Abuse?

I have just come across an interesting discussion of MySQL’s GROUP BY clause. I have always taken it as read that MySQL rather ‘abused’ the ANSI 92 SQL standard without any question. However Roland Bouman’s article - Debunking GROUP BY Myths - sheds some interesting new light for me on this matter.
